Title: Uncomfortable Resonance

Rating: PG (mentions of attempted kidnapping, unwanted/forced marriage, and Mercie's shitty adoptive father)
Summary: Mercedes offers some comfort to Ingrid following a certain incident, even while feeling discomforted by it in her own right. Set shortly after the Rumoured Nupitals paralogue is completed.

This time, Mercedes inviting Ingrid to her room was not for a tea party, although she still offered the same tea Ingrid liked as always; instead, she just wanted to provide a comfortable environment for the other young woman, following the concerning incident where her terrible would-be suitor had tried to have her kidnapped so he could use her Crest for his own nefarious purposes.
Truthfully, Mercedes felt discomforted by the incident as well, for reasons that went even beyond her feelings for Ingrid and her empathy for her situation; it reminded her that she too could potentially be married off to a bad man who cared for nothing more than her Crest, and that unlike Ingrid's father, whom she could tell truly cared about his daughter even if he made an unwise mistake this time, her own adoptive father only saw her as a tool he could use to bolster his own status -- a harsh reality she was always aware of, but never wanted or liked to think about.
Still, nothing would change the fact she liked to prioritise other people, and so she shifted her chair to be closer to Ingrid and gently hold her hand under the table; given what they'd discussed about marriage before, she was sure Ingrid wouldn't mind if the hand holding hers trembled ever so slightly.
