This was written for Angstober 2024 using prompt 8, "Growing Pains".
Title: Unwanted Change
Fandom: Revolutionary Girl Utena
Characters: Nanami, with several mentions of Touga
Rating: PG-13 (puberty angst, Nanami's brother complex, some internalised misogyny, some quietly disturbing undercurrents regarding the Kiryuu family and the Nanami&Touga relationship)
Summary: Nanami is growing up, and she doesn't like it.
-
Nanami didn't like looking at her body in the mirror when bathing these days. She hadn't liked doing so since it had begun to change.
It didn't feel so long ago when she'd still been a young child -- a girl, still untouched by any part of womanhood -- and when she'd used to share her bathtimes with her big brother. They did everything together back in those days -- of course they did, because any time Touga hadn't been with her back then was surely just her imagination -- but now they'd become so much more separate, the distance between them seeming to grow by the day.
Is it because I'm growing up? Is it because we're not kids anymore, as you keep saying now, big brother?
If growing up meant that she couldn't be as close to her big brother as she used to be, then Nanami didn't want to grow up.
Whenever she got out of the bath nowadays, she wanted nothing more than to put some clothing on -- be it her day clothes or her nightdress, depending on the time of day or night -- as soon as she could. She loved the dresses she wore now, at least; they were all so beautiful, and she loved to proudly show them off at parties and other gatherings, impressing everyone who beheld them. It was the body that had to fill those dresses that she didn't care for.
The dress she'd gotten from her uncle recently had given her especially mixed feelings. It was one of her most gorgeous dresses yet, but the neckline was so low that she wasn't able to wear anything underneath. She'd covered up her unease about that with proud smiles and haughty laughter, and when her dress turned out to be the very least of her worries after she first wore in front of everyone, it had almost been for the better.
She didn't want these breasts. She didn't want these curves, that were much like those of the girls her big brother went out with.
She didn't want to think about what having the same curves as those girls meant, or could mean, for her relationship with Touga.
She was his little sister, being his little sister was something she had that no one else could have with him, and surely nothing could ever change that; even so, her changing body was increasingly making her feel less and less like his little sister by the day, and she wished she could stop the clock or turn it back somehow so she wouldn't turn into a woman.
Nanami was growing up, whether she wanted to or not, and the thought of it was starting to terrify her.

Date: 2024-10-08 09:57 pm (UTC)Oh dear, indeed. Nanami's uncle is mentioned in exactly one line, in passing, and never makes any on-screen appearance, yet somehow I still can't help but get some "yikes" vibes from the guy. Might just be because he's part of the Kiryuu family, but even so...

Date: 2024-10-08 10:04 pm (UTC)(It makes me wonder what Touga and Nanami's original last name was, unless the poor kids would rather keep the Kiryuu name than remember the parents who abandoned them to that hellhole.)
